Hiring a contractor can be a confusing task. So we've put together some information about how we usually operate our business.
Here are some suggestions about getting started.
1. Ideas. Look in a variety of magazines and product catalogs for a styles or colors that appeal to you. Start to look at flooring types, trim types (baseboard, doors and windows), paint colors, wood types, etc. Do realize that sometimes magazines use very expensive materials for their layouts. We love those wonderful kitchens in some of the Better Homes and Gardens magazines, but often those are $125,000 kitchens. Flag the photos of the items that you like.
2. Splurging. Realize that this is your remodeling project and you get to do something fun. Pick one item that you would really like to splurge on like lighting. Light always seems to be in short supply in Alaska. We have some excellent lighting sources that are not available locally in Anchorage that can really customize your remodel.
3. Time. Getting ready to remodel takes time. You will need to make quite a few decisions before a final contract can be signed. It will also take additional time to review catalogs and visit showrooms to make product selections. Often those showrooms close by 5:00 pm on weekdays and may not be open on the weekends. So you may need to devote some weekday time for decision making.
4. Have fun. Sometimes we loose the forest for the trees. The whole idea is to make your home more pleasant. We want this to be a good experience.
5. Learning curve. Once you have done one remodel, the next one tends to go a little smoother. You already know a little bit about what to expect. So don't be hesitant to ask questions. If we use terms that you don't understand, please speak up. Remember this is your remodel.
